Eyelash Serums: Our Favourites for Luscious Lashes

The promise of the novel eyelash sera sounds tempting. These products promise more density and length. But do they really work?

Eyelash Serums: Our Favourites for Luscious Lashes

One or two millimeters more - they can make a big difference. Especially with eyelashes. Our editor Alexandra Schlump wanted to know more about it and found the secret of the serums.

Eyelash Serum Discovered by Accident

People who were treated with eye drops because of the eye disease glaucoma were pleased that as a side effect their eyelashes grew as long and lusciously as Bambi’s. This is due to a hormone called Prostaglandin. It not only lowers pressure in the eye, but also prolongs the growth phase of the eyelashes. This means that more, longer lashes grow at a more even rate.

The beauty industry recognised the opportunity and launched dozens of eyelash serums on the market.

Many of our colleagues at comprigo also swear by the product.

"Since I started using the serum, I have often been able to do without make-up," enthuses Jessica. How practical!

"It's also great for the eyebrows," Deborah adds. "I used to have little gaps everywhere, but now they've disappeared.”

The application is similar for all products and very easy:

Remove any eye makeup and be sure that your eyes are clean of any extra residue.

With a fine brush, apply the serum to the upper and lower lash line once a day.

What’s next? A little patience! It takes three to six, sometimes even 12 weeks until the full effect unfolds.

Tip: Once the eyelashes have reached the desired length, you only need to brush for 2-3 weeks to maintain the effect.

As successful and effective as the products are - not everyone can tolerate them. When I tried one of the products for the first time, my eyes burned were still slightly red hours later.

Other users have reported the following side effects:

+ headaches

+ watering eyes

+ itching

+ discolouration of the eyelid margin, in rare cases also of the iris

+ short-term visual disturbances, also when wearing contact lenses

The Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety warns accordingly that "eyelash growth serum containing prostaglandins as ingredients pose a risk to the health of consumers".

"Actually the side effects occur however rather rarely, calm the residents of Munich dermatologist and beauty expert Christoph Liebich. "If one has healthy eyes and no special allergies, nothing speaks against using the serum” according to the founder of the skin institute Dermazent.

If you’d still prefer to play it safe:

There are now a large number of products that do not use hormones. They work with classic cosmetic substances such as hyaluron, panthenol, amino acids and peptides or were developed from plant extracts.

"However, it is unlikely that the eyelashes will grow visibly," said Dr. Christoph Liebich. These products have a gentler effect. Which is probably perfect for my sensitive eyes. And indeed, after brushing, nothing burns or itches. And after a few weeks, I've noticed that my eyelashes appear stronger and more pronounced, even though they cannot keep up with the Bambi eyelashes of my colleagues.

No matter which variant you choose, here are some great products in both categories - with effective hormones or gentle ingredients.
