Enjoy the Summer: Find the Perfect Parasol
This summer could be the sunniest and driest in years, if not decades. Your balcony, terrace or garden has likely become an extension of your living room. But even the biggest sun fans get sweaty without a bit of shade. A nice sun umbrella, otherwise known as a parasol (a term which translates to “protection against the sun” in Italian) is a summer must-have for both the balcony and the terrace. Whether it's round, rectangular, small or large: the summer is twice as much fun with a parasol.
In addition to size and weight, the UV protection factor (SPF) is particularly important. Many sun umbrellas now come with SPF 20+, 30+ or even 50+ to protect against sunburn and the possibility of sun cancer. Keep in mind: SPF 15 to 24 stands for medium protection and SPF 50+ for excellent UV protection. Anyone who is very light-skinned and more at risk for sunburn should consider using sun protection products with a higher SPF.
A decent weight is also important so the parasol doesn’t take a trip through the neighbour’s yard as soon as a light breeze blows through. And last but not least, the size of the sun umbrella is crucial to make effective use of available space. comprigo presents you with a comparison of some popular parasols to help you make the perfect choice for your garden, balcony or terrace.
An easily adjustable, round model for smaller balconies and terraces. Space-saving, easy to assemble and disassemble and one of the most affordable models on the market.
With a diameter of 2 metres and an adjustable maximum height of 2.05 m, this inexpensive sun umbrella offers great sun protection for smaller balconies. The cover is made of 100% polyester and offers UV protection of about LSF 25+. Very fair-skinned people should still wear sunscreen under this parasol, but for a comfortable breakfast in the shade, it provides sufficient protection.
The round top can easily be tilted with the help of a solid hinge. That means you can enjoy cool shade even with sun rays coming in from the side or at a slant. The Sekey Parasol is easy to assemble and disassemble and comes with a protective cover. At 2.8 kg, it is relatively light, but stable enough to withstand a summer breeze. In stronger winds, however, it is advisable to fold it up so it doesn’t fly away. The manufacturer also recommends an umbrella stand with 20 kg dead weight. According to the manufacturer, the umbrella is also water resistant, but we still recommend storing parasols in this price range out of the rain.
With its summery design, 50+ UV protection and a diameter of 270cm, this medium-sized parasol gives a nice vibe to any terrace.
This medium-sized, square parasol with wooden features scored well in our price-performance comparison for good reason. With a sun protection factor of 50+, it offers sunburn-free outdoor fun with a diameter of 200 x 150 cm. The screen is made of polyester, and the solid rotary joint allows the umbrella to be adapted to sunshine coming from any angle.
The double cable support allows the screen to be opened and closed without much effort. Since wood can weather relatively quickly (depending on the production quality), we recommend bringing this sun umbrella in during the winter and in heavy rainfall. Buyers report that the workmanship of this product is not always perfect. But at a quarter of the price of its competitors, we still believe it offers a good price-performance ratio.
With 40+ UV protection, a diameter of 2.70 m and good workmanship, this 683-02 Umbrella Venedig from Schneider is impressive.
This round sun umbrella boasts a large diameter of 2.70 m. The aluminium frame is also powder-coated, making it more durable. The special feature: this sunshade features SPF 40+ protection according to Australia-New Zealand standards, and is therefore equipped to be durable against solar rays in particularly UV-intensive regions. The material is 100% polyester, rot-resistant and is highly water-repellent, so this parasol can even be stored outside during warm autumn evenings without moulding.
This classic round design offers a decent value for the money with a diameter of 2.5 metres and very high SPF rating (SPF 50+).
The 2.5m Wind-Up Parasol by Kettler is a crowd pleaser at a comparatively low price. With its easy-to-use wind-up mechanism, this sun umbrella is particularly easy to open and close. The umbrella can also be tilted with one button push, so you are well prepared for when the sun is in the wrong position. The aluminium frame is also height-adjustable and particularly robust and durable. The screen material is 100% polyester.
The manufacturer recommends a base with a minimum weight of 32 kg so the umbrella isn't lost to the wind. When not in use or in very windy weather, Kettler recommends that this parasol is wound into the downright position. If the 2.5m diameter is a bit too small for your taste, Kettler has the same classic wind-up parasol design in 3m.
