Light Bulbs: Out with Fluourescent and Halogen, in with LED!

Since 2010, new homes in the UK must be built with energy efficient lamps in a minimum of 75% of the interior lighting. Say goodbye to traditional incandescent and halogen lamps, and let us give you a couple reasons why LED-bulbs are the lighting of the future!

Here are five facts about LED lamps:

1) LED lights help you save on energy costs

Did you know that LED lights consume just 10% of the energy of a traditional light bulb? And they are just as bright! LED’s work like this: the lower their power consumption, the higher their energy efficiency. Most LED lamps have an efficiency rating of A+ or A++, which is a great value. If you want to replace a traditional light bulb with LED-lighting, you should pay attention to the wattage number on the packaging. A good rule of thumb: 1 watt is equal to 12 lumens. Lumens are an indication of the amount of light given off; the higher the lumen, the brighter the bulb.

2) LED lights are available in many colour temperatures

The colour of a light bulb is determined by its colour temperature. A bulb can either give off a cool or warm glow. Colour temperatures are measured in Kelvin. For a comfy atmosphere at home, warm white LED lights are best, which are usually somewhere between 2700 and 3000 Kelvin. A glow which simulates daylight is more suitable for working spaces, hallways, and kitchens; these type of bulbs are between 5500 and 6000 Kelvin. The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is also an important factor, as it describes how natural colours will be viewed in the light. For a living space, a CRI of 80 or more is fitting.

3) LED lights last long!

LED lights glow and glow and glow: they’re made for constant usage in hotels and businesses. However, their longevity is also useful at home: even cheap LED lights can stay bright for 15,000 hours or more. More expensive LED bulbs can last for up to 50,000 hours! The constant re-purchasing of traditional light bulbs, which in comparison only last for about 2,000 hours, is a thing of the past.

4) LED lights are also available in popular bulb shapes

LED light manufacturers make it easy to replace traditional light bulbs. You can get LED lamps made of transparent glass, in candle shape or classic bulb shape. The typical glowing wire is simulated by filaments. Halogen spotlights can also be replaced one-to-one. LED lights provide instant bright lights and are also partially dimmable. Their socket corresponds in shape and size to conventional ones.

5) LED lights are the future

Use of incandescent bulbs is being phased out around the world. They are no longer being manufactured, though old bulbs are still being sold. This means that sooner or later, they will no longer be available on the market. So, if you’d like to buy a new light source for your lamp, it’s best to use LED technology right away. It saves electricity costs and multiple trips to the nearest lighting shop.
