Get a Tan, the Healthy Way: The Best Sunscreens for Face and Body

Sunshine, the Beach, Summertime: Sun Makes Us Happy. But Only With the Proper UV Protection! Dr Dominik Göddertz, Developer of Sun Protection Products for Beiersdorf, Gives Us Tips on the Importance of Sunscreen.

Get a Tan, the Healthy Way: The Best Sunscreens for Face and Body

Dr Göddertz, a beautiful, even tan simply looks great on everybody. But is this even achievable while using a sunscreen with high UV protection?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: Of course! A high SPF (short for Sun Protection Factor) might lengthen your tanning time a bit, but the tan will also look nicer for much longer. UV-rays from the sun stimulates the production of melanin, which is responsible for the colour of a tan. Due to this, the daily use of a sunscreen can still allow for a healthy bronze glow.

So your advice is to use sunscreen daily?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: Yes! You should especially be using sun protection on your face year-round. There are plenty of face creams with SPF that should do in a pinch in the winter time.

What exactly is so dangerous about UV-rays?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: UVB rays penetrate the epidermal layer of the skin. They are responsible for tanning, but also for sunburns. The high energy given off from these rays can even directly damage your DNA, i.e. the genetic material in the cells. In the worst case, this can lead to skin cancer. Although UVA rays do not cause painful symptoms on the skin, they penetrate very deeply into the cells of the dermis. They can cause the production of free radicals and are the main cause of skin ageing and wrinkling. About 80% of wrinkles are caused by UVA rays. They can also contribute to the development of sun allergies.

Should we use a specific sun cream just for facial protection?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: Ideally, yes. The quality of facial skin cells differs from the rest of the body: the former tend to be thinner and weaker. Besides that, sunscreens for the body tend to be thicker and more oily, which can leave an unpleasant-feeling residue when applied to the face.

Which SPF for whom?

An expert in a suit

Which SPF is right for me?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: This depends on three factors: the quality of your skin, your skin type, and the amount of time you plan to spend under the open sky. If you have very light skin and hair, you will likely develop a sunburn more quickly than somebody with dark skin and hair. Due to this, individuals with lighter skin should go for a higher SPF. We recommend facial creams (for all skin types) with at least SPF 30. With this amount of sun protection, only about 1/30, so 3%, of UVB-rays will reach your skin.

Should I use sunscreen on a cloudy day?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: Absolutely. UVA- and UVB-rays can penetrate cloud coverage. These rays make up 90% of the rays which reach the earth.

Is there such a thing as 100% SPF coverage?

Dr. Dominik Göddertz: No, and if there was it wouldn’t be healthy! The body does require specific types of UV-rays.

How can I tell if I need to reapply my sunscreen?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: Some people notice a light tingling on the skin. When this happens, one should go out of the sun as soon as possible to avoid a sunburn. However, it’s important to note that each SPF has rough usage guidelines. People with lighter skin can expect to be fine in the sun for about 10 minutes without any sunscreen. If this person uses an SPF of 15, they can calculate their anticipated “safe” time in the sun as 15 (SPF) x 10 (self-protection) = 150 minutes, or about one and half hours.

Can I stay in the sun longer if I just reapply my sun protection?

Dr Dominik Göddertz: No, reapplication of sunscreen only re-establishes the protection which has been lost through swimming or perspiration.
