Tabletop Titans: Our Favourite New Board and Card Game Releases

Whether you’ve got a full-time job, you’re studying at a university or training for a new profession, the monotony of everyday life can start to feel pretty boring. There are many hobbies to help you add a bit of adventure into your life, but not every activity offers a mental challenge and opportunity to socialize as well as one does: tabletop gaming! Tabletop games is a general term which refers to, you guessed it, any games which can be played on a table. This includes board games, card games, dice games, pen and paper games and many more.

Tabletop games have been bringing people together around the world to test their wit and luck for centuries. In comparison to watching films or television, games require players’ direct attention and interaction. Additionally, tabletop games require all players to be present, which means they offer more opportunities for face-to-face interaction than some video games do.

Been there, played that? Try again!

Games such as Monopoly, Scrabble and Cluedo probably come to a lot of people’s minds when they hear the term “board game”. While these classics will always have a special place in our childhood memories, there are countless game designers and publishers producing exciting new games every year.

The International Spieltage (German for International Game Day) is an annual event held in Essen, Germany which showcases board and card games from around the world. I visited the International Spieltage this year to scour the international market for interesting new releases in the tabletop gaming industry. People from the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Italy, France, Poland, Korea, and even more countries put their best game designers to the test this year. After hours of browsing through colourful booths, chatting with developers and marketers, testing out games and a lot of walking, I came up with a list of exciting new games for players of (nearly) all ages, experience levels and interests.

Whether you’re competitive, creative or clever: here are some of our favourite new tabletop games which are sure to get you and your friends together for an evening of interactive fun.
