But what is a good protein bar? Some variations are so hard that you’ll be chewing for hours, while others simply aren’t as “healthy” as they claim to be. To keep you on the right track, here’s what you should look out for when buying one.

What Makes a Good Protein Bar?

When buying a protein bar, we’d advise basing your taste on three main components – taste, macronutrients (primarily protein and sugars), and price.

Macronutrients

Protein bars should have between 15 to 20 grams of protein – try not to get one with anything less if you’re wanting to up your protein intake and put on muscle. It’s important to note, though, that you should always try and stick to your recommended daily protein intake, and this varies by body weight and age.

You also want to make sure your bar contains more grams of protein than carbs and sugars. Look for high-quality sources like hydrolysed whey, whey isolates or micellar casein. As a general rule of thumb, check that the product contains more protein than any other macronutrients, helping you to up your intake and meet your health and fitness goals.

Price & Taste

We recommend avoiding bottom-of-the-range protein bars. The cheapest ones typically don’t taste great, and some are packed with sugars and aren’t particularly healthy for you.
